This week, we are exploring gender and race in science during the space race. We’ll be watching Hidden Figures, reading a brief article about whitewashing in the film, and listening to a song by Gil Scott-Heron. We will also be reading Oreskes’ account of heroism and objectivity to help make sense of these works.

For your post, you will do three things.

First, discuss what Oreskes means by heriosm and by objectivity. Please use at least two quotes from the article to define these in the context of her argument, and then use these definitions to summarize the broad argument she is making.

Next, you’ll draw on Oreskes’ ideas to help you explain what you see in Hidden Figures. Oreskes writes only about gender in her work. How does race intersect with gender? How does this intersection inflect how we think about science and scientists in this film?

Finally, you’ll generate a claim (arguement) of your own. This argument should address the following quesiton: How do Oreskes’ ideas inform your thinking about the choices the filmmakers made when they produced Hidden Figures (as discussed in the Vice article)?
